Overview

Spiti isn’t your usual hill-station holiday. It’s cold desert mountains, ancient monasteries clinging to cliffs, villages higher than most flights fly, and roads that make you fall in love with the drive itself. This 9-day trip with Dream Safar takes you from Chandigarh through Kinnaur’s apple orchards, past the last village before the China border, and deep into Spiti’s moon-like landscape — ending with the impossibly blue Chandratal Lake and a crossing over Rohtang Pass.

Highlights

  • Overnight stay at Chitkul, the last inhabited village on the Indo-China border
  • Visit the 500-year-old naturally preserved mummy at Gue village
  • Explore Key Monastery and the world's highest motorable villages — Komik, Langza and Hikkim
  • Mail a postcard from Hikkim, home to the world's highest post office
  • Camp beside the crescent-shaped Chandratal Lake, lit up under a sky full of stars
  • Drive through Kinnaur Valley along the Sutlej and Baspa rivers
  • Cross Kunzum La and Rohtang Pass, two of the most scenic high-altitude passes in India

Itinerary

Expand All
Day 1: Arrival in Chandigarh

Land in Chandigarh and settle into your hotel. Meet your road captain for a briefing on the days ahead, then relax over dinner before the trip begins.

Day 2: Chandigarh to Narkanda

An early start takes you past Chail's flower orchards and up towards Narkanda, known for its apple orchards, cherry trees and the scent of Deodar forests along the way.

Day 3: Narkanda to Chitkul

Drive along the Sutlej and then the Baspa River into the Kinnaur Valley, ending at Chitkul — the last village before the border, home to the famous Hindustan Ka Akhri Dhaba. Overnight in a homestay here.

Day 4: Chitkul to Kalpa

Head back via Karcham and Powari to Kalpa, a quiet village facing the snow-capped Kinnaur Kailash range. Spend the night at a camp or homestay soaking in the views.

Day 5: Kalpa to Kaza

Today's drive is the real showstopper — the Indo-Tibet Highway, the meeting point of the Spiti and Sutlej rivers at Khab Bridge, a lunch stop by Nako Lake, and a detour to see the centuries-old mummy at Gue village before reaching Kaza.

Day 6: Sightseeing in Kaza

Spend the day exploring Key Monastery and the high-altitude villages of Langza, Hikkim and Komik — among the highest motorable settlements in the world. Send a postcard home from the world's highest post office.

Day 7: Kaza to Chandratal Lake via Kunzum La

Cross Kunzum Pass and trek about 2 km to reach Chandratal — the "Moon Lake." Camp beside it and watch the sky fill with stars after sunset.

Day 8: Chandratal to Manali via Rohtang Pass

Leave Spiti behind and cross Rohtang Pass en route to Manali. Check into your hotel and unwind for the evening.

Day 9: Manali to Chandigarh

After breakfast, drive back to Chandigarh, arriving by evening as your Spiti adventure wraps up.
